Hello I'm Beth!
Beth is the clever, kind helper of the mighty Sea Witch — the only witch brave enough to keep the biggest monster in the ocean asleep. Beth would rather stay safely indoors than swim into the open sea. Which is tricky, when you are a mermaid living at the very bottom of it.
- Her Problem:
- Afraid of the open sea
- Her Witch:
- The Sea Witch
- Her sidekick:
- Max The (Great) Seahorse
This is my family:
The Sea Witch
The Sea Witch is the mighty guardian of the deep ocean and the only witch powerful enough to keep the ancient sea monster asleep. Each year, she travels to its cave and renews the spell that protects the underwater kingdom. She is brave, formidable and usually far too busy to look after herself, which is why she relies on her daughter and helper, Beth Bell.
Beneath all that power, the Sea Witch is a warm and protective mother who knows that real courage does not mean never being afraid.
Appears on:
Max the (Great) Seahorse
Max is a small seahorse with very large ambitions. He wants to be the fastest racer, the finest explorer and, preferably, the greatest seahorse in the entire ocean.
Max can be competitive and occasionally gets carried away by his own grand ideas, but he never ignores somebody who needs help.
He is beginning to discover that being great is not about winning every race or finding the most impressive treasure. Sometimes it means stopping, listening and choosing what is right.
Appears on:
Bobby, King Under the Sea
King Bobby rules the underwater kingdom from a vast coral palace filled with royal messengers, ceremonial shells and far too many cushions. He tries to appear calm and majestic, even when the sea is shaking and an enormous monster is beginning to wake beneath it.
Bobby is a kind ruler, but he is much better at giving important orders than facing slimy monsters himself. He trusts the Sea Witch completely and is slowly learning that bravery can come from the smallest and most unexpected members of his kingdom.
Appears on:
The Sea Monster
The Sea Monster has slept beneath the ocean for longer than anybody can remember. It is enormous, slimy, grumpy and convinced that every creature smaller than itself must be harmless. Once awake, it enjoys roaring, laughing and making the whole sea tremble. Fortunately, it is much less impressive when a magical spark lands on its nose.
Nobody knows where the monster came from or why it is so cross, although Sirens claim it once woke up on the wrong side of a very large cave.
Appears on:

The Sea Witch
Beth Bell is the clever, kind helper of the mighty Sea Witch. She knows exactly how to look after her mum—but Beth is terrified of the open sea.
When the Sea Witch suddenly disappears and an ancient monster begins to wake, Beth must leave the safety of home, face the things she fears and discover just how brave she can be.
Who is this book for?
Perfect for children aged 3–6, especially those who feel anxious, worry about trying something new or need a gentle reminder that bravery does not mean being fearless.
It is ideal for bedtime, shared reading, classrooms and any little reader who enjoys mermaids, sea monsters, underwater magic and enormous sound effects.
